4 Celebrity Homes in London (And Where To Find Them)

Thanks to its extravagant neighbourhoods, expensive shopping outlets and convenient transportation options, London is a prime choice for celebrities who are looking for a home base in the UK. As a matter of fact, all you have to do is walk down a busy street in London during the peak of the afternoon to bump into a celebrity without even knowing it.

Although most celebrities prefer to live in the outskirts of London to avoid the mass amount of tourists who flock to the city center on a daily basis, some celebrities surprisingly live right in the center of London close to the main attractions.

If you’re hoping to do some celebrity watching while you’re in London, or even scope out the some of the luxurious homes your favourite celebrities used to live in, here are four homes in London where celebrities once resided and how you can get to them:

1. Mick Jagger (Downe House, Richmond Hill)

He may not be living here anymore, but this is the address where Mick Jagger used to rest his pretty little head during the early 1990s when he was married to Jerry Hall; (and when Jagger and Hall separated, he moved into the flat next door).

Not only that, the Rolling Stones’ bassist Ronnie Wood also once lived in the same house, as well as the famous actor John Mills.

Pete Townshend of The Who also lives at the top of the hill, and apparently he often stops by the nearby Roebuck pub for a pint or two.

The easiest way to get to Downe House is to take a train to Richmond station, then head east on Church Road, turn left onto Mt. Ararat Road, and then left onto Richmond Hill.

2. Virginia Woolf (22 Hyde Park Gate)

The house located at 22 Hyde Park may not look like much from the outside, but it’s actually the birthplace of the famous writer Virginia Woolf. Virginia and her sister Vanessa Bell were both raised in the house, and were also home-schooled by their father.

The house was built sometime during the 19th century, and now serves as a popular B&B; (the new owner apparently has some interesting Virginia Woolf memorabilia as well…) The house is located in a cul-de-sac west of Queen’s Gate facing Kensington Gardens, and is a five-minute walk away from Kensington Gardens, Albert Hall and the Serpentine.

To get to the house from the High Street Kensington underground station, head northeast on Kensington High Street, turn right onto Hyde Park Gate and then take another right to stay on Hyde Park Gate.

3. Amy Winehouse (30 Camden Square)

On July 23rd, 2011, Amy Winehouse died of alcohol poisoning in her home at 30 Camden Square where she had resided for the last four months of her life. The house soon became a shrine for hardcore Amy Winehouse fans, and today tourists still flock to Camden Square to see the home with their very own eyes.

The four-storey house is worth approximately £2.5 million, and has three bedrooms as well as a garden and a music room with soundproofed walls.

The closest underground station to Amy’s house is Camden Rd., and from there you can either walk for 11 minutes to Camden Square, or get a bus from the station and stop at Murray Street.

4. George Orwell (22 Portobello Road)

Portobello Road may be known for its reference to the popular 1999 film Notting Hill starring Julia Roberts and Hugh Grant, but it also used to be where the famous writer George Orwell (author of Animal Farm and 1984) lived during the winter of 1927.

At the time Orwell was struggling financially, and went by his real name Eric Arthur Blair. Apparently he lived in the home’s unheated attic, and it was so cold in the room he had to warm his hands over a candle flame before he could start writing.

The closest underground station to the house is Notting Hill Gate. To get the house head west on Notting Hill Gate towards Pembridge Gardens, then turn right onto Pembridge Road before turning left onto Portobello Road.
