Like many cities in Southern Spain, Malaga is bursting with ancient historical monuments and modern landmarks which tell a story that spans thousands of years and cultures. The Essential Free Tour of Malaga gives guests the opportunity to visit all the main landmarks, and understand why Malaga has become in recent years the trendiest spot on the Mediterranean coast. The tour will take you to Marina Square, a popular place that commemorates a local legend, Diego the Cenachero (Diego the fishmonger), who is an important symbol of Malaga. Before heading towards the historic center you will enjoy a brief introduction to the origins of the city—from its founding by Phoenician Traders to the influence of Roman and Islamic Caliphate rule over the city before the arrival of the Catholic Monarchs.

Following this fascinating introduction, guests on the Essential Free Tour will be led through the charming streets of Malaga old town. On the way, guests will pass by the Shipyards Market, a former Moorish shipyard turned bustling market. Nearby is the stylish and elegant Larios Street, a popular shopping area that managed to survive more or less intact after being bombed during the Spanish Civil War. One of the highlights of this area is the stunning Cathedral. Here your guide will tell you why it is affectionately known as the "One Armed Lady" as well as some of its other curiosities. Malaga is also famous for being the birthplace of Pablo Picasso. Guests will pass by the Picasso Museum and visit Merced Square, home to Picasso's childhood home.

The Free Essential Tour route will take the guests to some of the oldest ruins in the city—the Roman Theater. This incredible example of Roman architecture dates back to the 1st century, during the reign of Emperor Augustus. Nearby here, guests will find Malaga Fortress (la Alcazaba) located at the foot of Gibralfaro Hill. This impressive military structure has been keeping watch for nearly 1,000 years. Guests will have the chance to explore and take plenty of photos. During the tour do not hesitate to ask your guide any questions you may have; they will be more than happy to answer them. And, of course, all visitors on the tour will come away with a host of recommendations and tips for what to do during the remainder of their stay.
