A stunning hilltop castle has presided over the capital of Slovenia since the 11th century. The Free Castle Tour of Ljubljana gives visitors the opportunity to thoroughly explore this medieval fortress, delve into its past, and uncover some of its best-kept secrets. This tour will take guests up the hillside of the castle. The path is easy to walk on, but some parts will be steep. As the group wanders up the hillside, they will be surrounded by lush trees and come across some hidden historical and architectural gems. Most tours will begin in the Old Town near Locksmith Street before heading up to the castle. Guests will have an opportunity to stop here to take photos of the curious faces that emerge from the wall.

The 900-year history of the castle means there is plenty to explore and stories to tell. On the way up to the castle, guests will come across the Monument to the Peasants' Revolt. Commissioned to commemorate the 500-year anniversary of the revolts. The revolts of 1515 engulfed nearly all of Slovenia before being brutally put out by mercenaries employed by the Holy Roman Empire. Included in Ljubljana’s Castle Free Tour is a stroll along the beautiful tree-lined Castle Avenue that runs along the castle's defensive walls. Guests will be able to see Outlook Tower, standing on the site of the original Pipers Tower that was pulled down during the French occupation around 1810. This tower offers the most spectacular views of the city.

One of the prominent buildings of the castle complex is St. Georges Chapel. The modest exterior disguises a lavish interior with gorgeous gothic and baroque paintings. It is one of the oldest built parts of the complex, dating from 1489. As you explore the courtyards and hidden corners, you'll come across lots of interesting places, such as art galleries and artist workshops. Nearby is the funicular railway that connects the castle with the old town. The short journey up or down the hill offers some incredible views. During your tour, please do not hesitate to ask your guide as many questions as you wish. And, of course, all visitors will leave with a list of recommendations and tips for the rest of their stay.
