Come on a journey through the amazing heritage of Soviet architecture and learn what life was like in Moscow during the days of the Soviet Union. The Free Soviet Moscow Tour is designed to cater to all types of visitors, from architecture buffs with an interest in Soviet architecture to those who wish to have an eye-opening experience about life under Communism. One of the highlights of the tour, both historically and in sheer size and scale, is the House on the Embankment. It is a great example of the constructivist architecture that flourished in the Soviet Union during the 1920s. This massive building was home to the Soviet elite until Stalin’s Great Purge, when many communist party cadres were sent to gulags or executed.
The Soviet Moscow Free Tour will take guests to the iconic Red Square, a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site. It has been the focal point for many key political and historical events throughout the centuries. Amongst the many iconic landmarks of this square, guests will find Lenin's Mausoleum, the leader of the revolution and founder of the Soviet State. An interesting fact is that Stalin’s body was also displayed here but was relocated during the destalinization era of the 1960s. There are Soviet monuments and memorials all over the city, including in some of its metro stations! When visitors descend into Ploshchad Revolyutsii metro station, they will find it filled with bronze statues of ordinary Russians, the "defenders of the Soviet Nation".
Included on the route is a visit to Lubyanka Square and the Lubyanka Building, once the feared headquarters of the KGB. The square used to feature a monument to Felix Dzerzhinsky, the first head of the Soviet Security Service. It was relocated to the Fallen Monuments Park in the 1990s after years of controversy. Depending on the time and the dynamic of the group, the tour will head further down the embankment to the Kotelnicheskaya Embankment Building, one of the impressive seven Stalinist skyscrapers that are peppered around the city. During the tour, do not hesitate to ask your guide as many questions as you like. And, of course, guests will come away with a wealth of recommendations and tips for the rest of their stay.
