Located on top of Mount Benacantil, overlooking the Mediterranean Sea and the city of Alicante, the Castle of Santa Barbara is a majestic landmark. Throughout the Free Castle Tour in Alicante, you will learn how the fortress was built at the end of the 9th century during the Arab rule. Future King Alfonso X “the Wise” took the castle on the day of Saint Barbara; then, over the centuries, the structure was fortified and expanded. Touring the castle's towers and ramparts, you'll hear stories about the castle being bombed by French troops, the rebellions it hosted, and much more. During the tour, you will also learn about the role that the castle played as a prison during the Spanish Civil War, and find some marks left by prisoners.
