On your Vatican Free Tour, you will unravel the history of one of the most unusual city-states in the world and also the only country that is a UNESCO World Heritage Site in its entirety. The most prominent attraction in Vatican City in Rome is, of course, the massive St. Peter's Square and St. Peter's Basilica. St. Peter's Square is a jewel of baroque architecture where pilgrims from all over the world gather every day. Reigning over the square is the Basilica of St. Peter, one of the most spectacular churches in the world. Its design involved great masters such as Michelangelo, Bramante and Raphael.
During the tour, you will cross Sant'Angelo Bridge, a 1st-century archaeological wonder built by Emperor Hadrian. From there you can enjoy spectacular views of Castel Sant'Angelo. Although it was designed as a monumental pantheon for the family of Emperor Hadrian, it has been used as a castle and a prison. Do not forget to ask your guide about the origin of the castle’s name! It’s related to Pope Gregory I, a vision that he had while he was holding a procession, and a plague affecting Rome. During the tour, your guide will also share lots of information about the famous Vatican Museums, so you can visit them on your own.
